Jess Nicol is a creative writing PhD student who writes mostly short fiction and memoir. She loves cats and is managing editor for the Rejected McSweeney’s Lists website, which provides a home for “top-notch but rejected work, when it has nowhere else to go.”
As a part of this role, she manages the @rejectedblog Twitter handle, which frequently features hilarious writing tips, i.e.
tip: be kind to yourself when you realize your
#writing research has degenerated to just googling “horse.” You’ll get there, promise.
as well as titillating (and slightly tweaked) quotes:
“I discovered that
#rejections are not altogether a bad thing. They teach a #writer to rely on his own judgment and to say in his heart of hearts, ‘To hell with you, I’ll try @rejectedblog.’” – Saul Bellow
She is equally funny on the page, with one of my personal favorites being a recollection of working under a mall Santa Claus. She team-taught with Jordan (and was his benevolent overlord in her role as Head TA) in the baffling (for both students and student-teachers alike) ENGL 302: Intro to Theory (yes, we Lacan!).
